About The Supercharged Storybook Slam
The Supercharged Storybook Slam is a brand-new show from Bouncy Zebra, aimed at showing our audiences that reading, unleashes super powers that anyone can have!
The Supercharged Storybook Slam is the story of Ċet, a girl who LOVES reading.
But Ċet has got a secret. Every time Ċet reads a book, she undergoes a magical transformation – she becomes Awesome Book Kid – the most incredible superhero in the world who loves nothing more than spreading the word about how awesome books are!
Then one door something strange happens. The evil Wiper turns up and starts “wiping” all the books in town. Somehow, every book wiper touches just goes blank.
Ċet wants to battle Wiper, but without a book to read she cannot turn into Awesome Book Kid.
And with Wiper’s turbo-charged wiping machine on the rampage, things look desperate…until Ċet turns to her new friends in the audience for help, and that is when we all realise…books can give superpowers to anyone!
An Interactive Experience
In our interactive performance, we bring learning to life with a touch of magic! Imagine the children’s amazement as Wiper, the mischievous villain, wipes all the text and images from a book, leaving its pages blank before their eyes. But this isn’t just about the trick – it’s about sparking curiosity, creativity, and a love for storytelling. Through the magic, we engage students in an imaginative journey that encourages critical thinking and teamwork, all while having fun!
The Supercharged Story Slam was, in part, developed with the assistance of the National Book Council (Malta).
Running Time

We NEED to get children reading!
According to 2022 European Commission country report on Malta, we are facing a reading crisis. When comparing local students with the EU 27 average, Malta has a higher percentage of low achievers in reading in both low and high socioeconomic status groups.
We need to get Maltese students more excited about reading.
We feel that by pitching a show at a young audience and making reading an exciting, fun activity we can contribute to creating a love of books in our audiences that we hope can last a life-time.
As well as the educational benefits, reading helps children’s wellbeing and develops imagination. Through The Supercharged Storybook Slam we are encouraging children to read, we are promoting reading choice, we are bringing reading to life and we are making reading an active (rather than passive) past-time. We want children to be exhilarated by books, to talk to their friends about books and to look forward to reading. And we feel that this show is a great springboard for that.
So it is more than a normal show?
It is loads more than just a normal show!
The Supercharged Storybook Slam features a mini story-writing workshop during the actual show which we hope will enthuse the students and leave them hungry for more! This means that every show we do will create a new unique story. This unique story will be written down, and left with our audience as a memento for them to remember the power of their own imagination. Which means no one show is ever like another!
Also, in collaboration with teaching professionals and parents, The Bouncy Zebra team have put together a teachers/resource pack that not only touches upon how our show fits in with the curriculum but also offers a number of story-writing exercises which we hope can be useful to teachers during post-show lessons.

Relevance to Curriculum
The Supercharged Story Slam touches upon a multitude of curricular themes in a fun, innovative way,
We feel that this interactive performance cuts across many of the learning outcomes that teachers are striving for, particularly in years 6 and 7.
For instance, one of the main aims of this show is to help children understand how to work with each other, as a group – A big part of the show involves the students coming up with a story together, indeed the successful outcome of our show DEPENDS on collaborative work. And we feel that this fits in really with work being done in year 7 during PSCD. However it is within the English curriculum that we feel there is most relevance touching upon a number of the listening and viewing, speaking and representing literature and language awareness and production outcomes. All this whilst instilling a love of reading!
